I was not successful at detoxing. Around 3 pm on my first day, I became so dizzy that I nearly fainted and had to eat a bowl of Saigon Cafe‘s pho to give me strength. I also ate a steamed banana cake (because when you fail at detoxing, you might as well fail in style).
The second day of my detox was far worse. I received some very upsetting news, and as I was about to sink into despair my friend Jinn came over to cheer me up, and treat me to brunch at Skinners. We split a basket of mini muffins, a breakfast burrito, a lobster blt, and drank Mean Bellinis (they laced it with rum). We wasted the afternoon away and enjoyed two bottles of red wine, and had at least 1 (2?) glasses of white wine each. I invited my friend Sara to join us for dinner and I cooked Madhur Jaffrey‘s Chicken with Onions and Chilies (posting this recipe soon). I estimate that I consumed about 3000 calories on the second day of my “detox.”
Ah huh. Not successful.
But it’s ok because the next day, I woke up, and I prepared for my cooking demonstration at NJ AIDS Services. And by the time I setup my demonstration of anti-oxidant rich super foods, all of the bad behavior of the day before was forgotten. The women were friendly, funny, enthusiastic, inspiring, and good cooks! They were willing to try ingredients they’d never liked before, and now they will be cooking the recipes for others. The cooking demo cured what ailed me. And I can’t think of a more successful endeavor.
